Miri Commercial Developments

Postby George » Fri Jun 15, 2007 11:09 pm

Recently I have been reading about many commercial developments in Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu, KK and Sandakan. Since I've been overseas studying, I'm quite out-dated. So what's new in Miri?

I read off Wikipedia that a Giant Hypermarket is in construction in Permyjaya. Is that true? Whats happening opposite Imperial Mall? Howbaout extension of the Bintang Plaza? and whats happening in Centre Point phase II? Any new shopping complex/malls coming up? Whats happening to Miri Square? Any hotels coming in soon? I read somewhere last year that Novotel is looking for a suitable location in Miri.

Please do add some updated photos if you have any. :)

Parkson to raise retail space by 30%

Saturday June 23, 2007

BUTTERWORTH: Parkson Corp Sdn Bhd will have 30% more retail space with the opening of five new outlets and expansion of two existing outlets nationwide by end-2008.

Chief operating officer Toh Peng Koon said the new outlets would be at Sunway Pyramid, Bandar Sunway and The Pavilion in Kuala Lumpur, the Spring in Kuching, East Coast Mall in Kuantan, and KBTC in Kota Baru.

Its existing outlet at Plaza Gurney would be expanded while a seventh outlet at Bintang Plaza in Miri, Sarawak, would relocate to bigger premises.

“We are expecting between 8% and 10% growth in the next two years and foresee the retail market performing to expectations,” he said after the opening of Parkson’s 30th outlet at Sunway Carnival Mall here yesterday.

Toh said the new outlet in The Pavilion would become the company’s flagship and biggest outlet with a floor space of 250,000 sq ft.

He said the company would spend about RM60mil in renovation for the outlet at The Pavilion while the extension at Plaza Gurney, expected to be opened by end-2008, would cost RM113mil.

“We also hope to open outlets in Laos and Cambodia. We will set up two new outlets in Vietnam to make it five outlets in total. We see Vietnam as a new economic powerhouse and are confident of doing well there.

“We also have 40 outlets in 28 provinces in China,” he added.

Toh said the company had projected a RM50mil turnover for the Seberang Jaya outlet which had a retail space of 130,000 sq ft.

Parkson Sunway Carnival occupies the ground and first floors of the mall.

It offers 230 brands of merchandise, including ready-to-wear attire for ladies, men and children, a cosmetics and fragrances section and a toy section operated by Toys R Us.

Toh said the outlet also provided porter and escort services, free alterations and home delivery.

Well too bad. I just hope Parkson don't do something dumb like move to Senadin or something - plus I didn't think they need more space, the place is very empty even during sales as it is now.

what i know the only hotel will be built in miri for 1 or 2 years from now is only bintang hotel.. novotel hotel is in kuching, behind the hilton and riverside cineplex.

in front of imperiall mall( the vacant land) shin yang want to take over it for expansion of new shopping complex(boulevard also lah) but the land is belong to masjid.Same as mega hotel before the land belongs to masjid.

but shin yang and dtauk taib is abang adik one...they will have the land.

miri project majorly will be started after marina fully finished.apartment will be built at canada hill, all people living in town and kampung area will be chased away to hutan. and no more miri people, only expatriat and orang putih

Trasher115, it is a sad reality of life isn't it? I guess those illegal squatters would be relocated and those with land title would be compensated like what is happening at Gilbert Estate (which are the houses behind the court house and bintang plaza). Those people are being compensated and commercial constructions are likely to start there (....which is as far as I heard).

Ladybird, it's the Giant Hypermarket thats "supposedly" coming. Giant Supermarket will follow where Parkson Grand goes as it is part of the contract that Giant Supermarket would operate at every Parkson Grand Dept Store. Recently, one Giant Hypermarket opened in Sandakan. I was merely speculating on what I have read from Wikipedia about it coming to Miri and this may be wrong. I thought Wikipedia was inaccurate!

@kuching@, thanks for the website on Merdeka Mall, I think this is highly exciting. Although I agree with some sentiments saying Miri doesn't need more shopping complexes, I must say more shops= more competition and this means lower price for consumers(hopefully) and more money from Bruneians!. The Merdeka mall looks like it would double the size of Boulevard Shopping Complex. Does it mean construction near Imperial would start to challenge the upcoming mall? Is Parkson supposedly going to be relocated to this new Merdeka Mall which is projected to open in year 2009? (ME SPECULATING)

Whats going to happen to Bintang Plaza? I hope it won't get abandoned like Wisma Tunku Pelita or Oil Town. Hopefully, Bintang Plaza would start refurbishing and expanding soon so that it can fight off competition also. I must say though, There is one thing I personally dislike about Bintang Plaza; It is poorly maintained! Toilet's awful and smells of cigarette smoke, Cinema and Bowling Alley is poorly maintained, floors are cracking esp within Parkson Grand and the atrium is far too crowded.

Thank you all for contributing, Please keep it coming. I'm sure more exciting developments are on the way!

All we can see is the improvement of commercial infrastructure. new better, bigger shopping complex. better thing to come?...dun thing so.

not that i don't agree with you George. it is always the case whr more shops= more competition=lower price. but in miri, or should i say sarawak in general. that equation only work if monopoly does not added into it.

miri commercial market had been control and monopolized those few ppl. most businesses only exist or survive because of them. the money are not flowing into the hand of the ppl. small medium company are not earning enuf to grow. employee are getting peanuts for their contribution. no one have the money to buy quality product as it cost a lot more. there fore, ppl in miri op for lower quality product which clearly had flooded the market in miri.

more and more ppl are going else whr looking for job. we should not rate miri's development just by how many shopping complexes are available. but also judge by how much such development contribute to the welfare of the ppl.
having no luck!!!!
