Earth Hour

8.30 pm Saturday March 28, 2009

See your world in a whole new light.

Earth Hour

At 8.30pm on March 28, 2009, cities across the world will turn off their lights for just one hour - Earth Hour TM - to show that it's possible to take action on global warming. Switching off is a simple action that can make a difference and it sends a powerful message that the people of the world care about the future of the planet.

We need you to help us make it happen.

What can you do?
1) Sign up to Earth Hour by visiting www.earthhour.org/malaysia and commit to turning off your lights on March 28 from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm. We will send you all the information you need to make Earth Hour happen at home and at work (and to cut your energy bills in long term). It's free to take part.

2) Take appliances off standby; unplug any appliances - mobile phone charger, TV, microwaves, MP# player computer monitor, printer - that are not being used and are on standby.

Appliances left on standby account for up to 10 % of the average household's electricity use.

3) Spread the word about Earth Hour and involve your friends, family and workmates. Get them to make the commitment at www.earthhour.org/malaysia to turn off their lights at 8.30 pm Saturday March 28, 2009

4) Switch to Green Power. Contact your power company today and ask them their Green Power products or go to the WWF website in your country for more information.

This group of people has nothing better thing to do.

What can they expect for that hour only to save our earth?

Why 8:30pm - 9:30 pm and not 8:30am - 9:30 am?

8:30pm to 9:30pm in asian country is a night time and in europe is a day time. (Sending different message to different country)

If possible, i suggest to shut down all the electricity around the world including 24 hrs industrial factory.

Can they do this? IMPOSSIBLE!!!
I have not failed, I have just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

Hi remaong,

To answer your questions, Yes it is possible.
Its not about saving power, its about creating awareness... People live without thinking about the environment and how its important for each and everyone to do their part. A campaign like earth hour gets ppl thinking about what they can do and NEED to do. Yes you are right ,1 hour is not going to save the planet BUT it will start the process of more aware ppl and fingers cross, we all can make a difference together!!

About the time zone, its 830pm in all time zones..So if were turning off the lights at 830pm here in Malaysia, so are the Europeans at 8.30pm ;)

Have some optimism my friend! ;)

BTW- have you signed up and pledged your support at http://www.earthhour.org/malaysia?

Yes, earth hour is an awareness event. An awareness about Global Warming and Climate Change. Still in doubt about this topic ? Well, take a look in the newspapers, better still, this website on the reports of land-slides and floodings in our very door-steps. What can I (one person) do about it ? well, you and the other person reading this and taking that earth hour steps will make every other person aware that everyone is capable of at least reduce carbon emissions.

Check on the floods on the northern side of Australia and the fires in the South side. A continent with 2 natural disasters. The pace of creating carbon emissions is too fast, we are unable reduce the effect much to say resolve it. The current Carbon (CO2) emissions in the world is currently over 385ppm. The levels before the industrial revolution is about 180ppm. Still don't think it's your responsibilities ? Maybe not yours but the fate of the generations to come is in your hands. With the simple flick of the finger on the light switch, you can inevitably reduce large amount of CO2 emissions. Another example is our air-conditioners, by increasing the temperature set on your unit up by 1 degree, e.g. from 20C to 21C or from 24C to 25C, you will help reduce some CO2. If collectively, everyone in Miri does that be it residential or commercial, then we would reduce a lot of fuel and CO2. Air-conditioners are for conditioning the room's temperature so it would be comfortable to stay or work in and not to create a climate condition that's too cold !

Still not convince ? Well, the next time the flood waters rises up till the car porch, just ask ourselves, why is it flooding ?

glad to see someone in miri taking the initiative. ive heard about this last year but it's the first time malaysia is taking part. stephanie chai was in our studio to do an interview with one of our reporters about Earth Hour. i think msians r in general, the most inconsiderate ppl in the SEA region. its time to change.
faith is for those who are not already living in grace

Anyways, earth hour is a good way to start. I hope the new mayor will try to initiate this issue.

For people who live in a small town like Batu Niah, their "power supply" always break down without notice. It could be few times in a day or even in an hour. So i guess they have contribute enough for the so called "global warming", and don't blame them if they are not doing this. Thanks.
