Heavy-Metal and other Sub-Genre of Metal Hangout

Postby bunyimanok on Thu Jun 19, 2008 8:15 pm

...A place where we Metal fans hangout.

To those who dont know what Heavy-metal is:
Heavy metal (often referred to simply as metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and the United States. With roots in blues-rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, and emphatic beats. Allmusic states that "of all rock & roll's myriad forms, heavy metal is the most extreme in terms of volume, machismo, and theatricality."

You got me.

I will start from the roots: http://metalroots.gw.net.nz/

Early bands like Cream, Blue Cheer, MC5, Led Zeppelin & of course Black Sabbath were the precursors.

And can we have the devil horns smiley? At least we don't have to do this => \m/

Scorpions came a bit later after Black Sabbath. To be specific, one of the bands that became popular after the NWOBHM explosion. But let's not update this thread too fast, shall we?

After Black Sabbath era,

NWOBHM = New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (mid-1970's - now). Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Scorpions (Bunyimanok's favourite I believe), Saxon, Girlschool, Diamond Head (not to be confused with King Diamond, the solo artist), Jaguar, Demon, etc. etc.

Quote Rob Zombie in an interview:

"Metal fans do not listen to their music for one summer, they like it FOREVER"

And that's what makes us stand out from the rest of the grain.

Hammerfall was responsible for reviving the power metal genre. That's why now we have bands like Sonata Artica, Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Falconer, Dragonforce etc. etc.

I've been listening to a lot of folk metal lately, bands like Korpiklaani, Eluvitie, Turisas, Trollhammer, etc.
Haven't heard an overall good metal album all year yet though. Best thing so far was the new Mindless Self Indulgence album, but they aren't exactly metal.
