Chinese Wedding Dinner Ang Pao “Market Rate”

Postby melbk » Sat Aug 25, 2012 5:00 am

What's the proper amount to give for a Chinese wedding dinner gift/money packet (ang pow)? I'm the groom friend and just wondering what's the market rate now at Miri. The reason i'm posted this question because i don't wanna be cheap and at the same time don't wanna oeverdo it either.

Thanks in advance and i really appreciate the information you have provided.
Regards,

the price can be different depend on where the lunch/dinner is held

if at hotel, normal price is RM50 each person, if it just normal buffet lunch/dinner it normally RM30.

I think normal rate is RM50, anything below
that is considered too low already. At least that's
the way I see it nowadays.

Of course, giving more than RM50 will depend
on who is the newly weds, ranging from RM100
to RM1000.

Biggest angbao I know ever given was RM60k,
imagine RM60k cash wrapped up in big envelope
brought to the wedding.

60k? If that is not over doing it, its definitely a little "Show off-ish"...Look at me!!! I am giving them a big bag of money...lol. I'd say if you are friend of the groom (close circle of friends not just work friends) and you didn't do anything for him for his stag then at least RM100-RM300. If its just work friends then RM50/head should be suffice.

You can say so but the giver and the groom
must had a special relationship ya? Mind you
that was 19 years ago again.

Anyway typical angbaos from rich people are
usually in the 2-5k range. 60k is a bit rare.

well you see, the reception cost the wedding couple depending where they are having it.
so i say if you are going to the reception with your partner, it might cost the wedding couple $X per head, so i reckon [ $100 + 2*$X ] is not bad :)

Well I can understand they must have a special relationship, I would have just done it in a more discreet way instead of showing up with 60K in an envelope. I am just saying how I would have done things if I was giving a large sum of money to a wedding couple. But then again maybe the "Look at me" is the Malaysian attitude....lol.
