for aps-c eos i'd get the 28mm f1.8 for permanent use.

but it still depends on what kind of photography u'r into, for me i'm not into zooming.

get a used 70-200mm f/4L USM(without IS)...should be enough..or 55-200mm...hehehe...couple with 18-55mm kitlens and 50mm...good to go..

I would suggest 55-250 IS, at f5.6 and 400mm, IS is invaluable, moreover it's cheaper than the Sigma you mentioned. Try get a second hand too!

Oh about that taking photo of Linda, just boost your ISO to compensate that slow f5.6, 60D high ISO isn't that bad. It surely can't match a 70200f2.8IS, but surely kick any super zoom P&S out there.

55-250mm brand new is cheap..used one with warranty also can find..i only have 18-55mm kitlens with 50mm..im interested to take candid portrait photo...think of getting used 70-200mm or f4L or 24-105mm...here some "conclusion i get from google"
