Give priority to locals, Shell told
By Mohamad Abdullah

MIRI: State assemblyman for Pujut Andy Chia yesterday called on Sarawak Shell Berhad and Sabah Shell Petroleum Company Limited to give priority to retaining locals in their restructuring exercise.“If the Sarawakians and Malaysians can perform the jobs, they should be re-employed. The jobs should not be filled by expatriates. It will be very discouraging for the locals who have worked so many years with the companies,” he told a press conference.

Chia said he had called the press conference after learning about the exercise from the people here who had approached him for help and advise as Shell was now recruiting again.

According to him, in the last two weeks, former senior employees of Shell were being asked to re-apply for employment with the company and he was concerned for the families of former employees

who might not be re-employed.

“To my understanding, Shell is restructuring its operations throughout the world and Miri is not spared. A lot of people will be affected, not only the senior level staff but also ordinary employees.

“Shell must give priority to Sarawakians and Malaysians during the exercise. They should not terminate them but try to retain as many of them as possible,” he said.

Chia said many locals who were employed by Shell were demoralised by the exercise.

Do you think Shell will listen? Good luck trying. It won't change the fact that the government have no power to STOP it.

Hi Miri-Sarawak. It sure is a piece of gloomy news for Mirians - not just from SSB or other oil companies, but various vendors are affected as well.

The locals shall not be terminated.....
Many of them were competent people who can do these jobs.....

If the locals cant do it,are they going to find employees from their own country?
Spending money to train them again?

If the company doesnt employ the locals, what are the previous employee going to do for a living?

I hope they solve this problem soon.....

From what I've seen in Shell, I say get rid of the current personnel they have and bring back the old skool shell people cos the current staff IMHO are useless lah! SERIOUSLY! I dare make that statement cos I've been around as a freelancer and had the opportunity to work with various companies such as Exxon-Mobil, Petronas, Dow Chemicals, Optimal, etc. I'm EXTREMELY disappointed with the way Shell is now. But hey, I'm just a freelancer and have the option of leaving if i'm not happy with the way they are. SO i lepak makan gaji oni lor. Salary also so-so oni lah waiting for next project jer. hehehe

So much pessimism.. How will this even materialise if you already condemn it before it can be improved?

hey dude.. i see nothing wrong with it. He is just showing his support as a reps in Miri. If you are wearing the same shoes, you will do the same. It is better that he talk than he keep quite because if he is not talking and helping locals, then people will say he is useless. I think it is not easy for him ya..

Hey dude, how can you be so sure it is all sarawakian that get treated poorly in this case.

I am sure they do have a system where they will try to recruit back those with excellent performance after all this year.

Also, if you are in the O&G industry, you will find this is normal.

SSB has been hopeless since 1993. It's not worth working for them anymore. They're nothing but another Carigali contractor now.

But we cannot deny that the oil and gas sector in Miri has given thousands of Mirians job opportunities.

Why is it not worth working for them, may i ask. Do they not still give employees much better treatment and working environment, not to mention fantastic remuneration, compared to many other private sectors?

I just don't think you have made a fair and truthful statement that they are not worth working for and that they are hopeless. But on being another Carigali contractor, perhaps there is some basis of truth there.
